THE SMART JEWELRY SHOW ANNOUNCES THE "ULTIMATE" DESIGN CONTEST
(November 13, 2009)

(CHICAGO, IL) Designing jewelers are invited to show their stuff in a unique new jewelry design competition from INSTORE, INDESIGN and The SMART Jewelry Show. The competition will take jewelry designs from rendering to finished pieces in a competition pitting CAD (Computer Aided Design) against traditional hand rendered designs. Judges will select ten finalists from each category to produce their designs for display and a final round of voting at The SMART Jewelry Show being held April 24-26, 2010 at the Chicago Navy Pier. The top four finalists will receive an all expense paid trip to The SMART Jewelry Show, with the overall contest winner to be announced on the last day of the show. The winning piece will be featured on one of the covers of INSTORE magazine.

"This competition is a natural extension from our show's popular 'Bench Pressure Challenge' introduced in 2009. It's another way to showcase the 'rock star' qualities that many jeweler-designers have. With "The Ultimate Design Contest" we look forward to acknowledging and discovering even more 'rock stars'," says Show Director Jim Reed.

"This competition requires the contestant to design the jewelry item and to participate in the construction of it as well. Wearablity, attention to detail and craftsmanship will be considered in the judging of this competition. By supplying the main gemstone this competition is affordable for small shops, retail stores and budding new designers", says competition manager Joel McFadden, owner of Joel McFadden Designs in Red Bank, NJ.

Entries are based on a common set of customer requirements – forcing designers to show their creativity within narrower limits. Contestants are asked to create an original design using gemstones provided by Gem 2000 for the finished ladies ring. Other than being a size seven ring and containing the required gemstone (either 9x7 mm faceted oval aquamarine or 9x7 mm oval cabochon rhodolite garnet) the designer is open to show off their talent and skill with an original design using their choice of metals, accents, and manufacturing techniques. CAD or hand rendered designs will be accepted and must be received by January 8, 2010.

An entry fee of $75 is required.
